The 84th birth anniversary of legendary film actress of West Bengal Suchitra Sen was observed through a commemorative programme in her ancestral hometown in Pabna on Monday. The programme, organised by Suchitra Sen Smrity Shangrakhhan Parisad, featured discussion and cultural shows and brought together local luminaries to pay homage to the actress who died last year. The event was chaired by M Saidul Haque Chunnu, president of the organization, and addressed among others by Ahmedul haque Rana, secretary of Pabna press club, Dr Ram Dulal Voumik, secretary of the organisation, and theatre practitioner Sarwar Ullash. The speakers talked about Suchitra’s unrivalled presence in the Bengali film industry during her years as an actress and recalled her fondness for her ancestral roots. Suchitra was born on April 6, 1931, at her grandfather’s home at Vangabari of Belkuchi upazila of then greater Pabna. She died of heart failure on January 17, 2014. Her ancestral home in Pabna had been occupied for three decades before it was freed following weeks of popular demand since her death.
